Why is an account needed for 1st Mate?

The 1st Mate system requires an account to setup and configure the system.  Accounts can be created through an existing social media login or by creating an account through email.  If a social media login option was used, the user will always need to login that way.  Social media account logins will not work in the "Log in with email" option.   

After the system is setup, ownership can be transferred from the app of the account owner.
